Oak wood is well known for being dense and very strong, and is fairly resistant to insect attacks and fungal infections due to its high tannin content. Its uses over the ages have been varied. It was, and still is, commonly used to make barrels to hold wine, sherry and other spirits for a long period as it ages. The oak wood adds a more developed flavour and texture to the wine.

One of its other uses is for furniture making. Oak furniture can be made from reclaimed oak, which is wood salvaged from sources such as wood flooring from old homes, transformed into smooth pieces of furniture.
